Movies I'm Stoked About
Oscar season is upon us! Honestly, I never knew this was a thing until last year when MoviePass decided to give America unlimited free movie tickets and lose a shit ton of money in the process. This terrible business model grew my love for movies exponentially and although MoviePass sucks now, my movie hobby has not disappeared. After a sub par slate of summer blockbusters, it appears that there are a fair amount of exciting movies coming out this Fall and Winter. As a service to Almost Friday movie fans (Jerry, Chad, Jackson), I have decided to preview the ones I am most stoked for here:
Mid90s - October 25th
This flick is about a kid growing up in LA in the mid 90’s who meets a group of skateboarders that become his best friends. It is Jonah Hill’s directorial debut and honestly, the amount of Jonah Hill podcast interviews I have listened to promoting this movie is unsettling. This movie is unbelievably up my alley and I am so stoked for it.
Beautiful Boy - October 25th
Beautiful Boy is about a struggling addict and his relationship with his father who desperately wants him back. This trailer legitimately makes me cry 3 separate times every time I watch it. Ever since I saw Call Me By Your Name last year, I legit have a crush on Timothee Chalamet and there are few things better than a serious Steve Carell performance. I am ready to bawl my eyes out while watching this story.
Suspiria - November 2nd
I have no idea what this movie is about but it looks scary as fuck and I am excited to not sleep for a few weeks. I have never really been in to horror but have started to develop an appreciation of some prestige horror flicks (Raw and Hereditary) due to the pure visceral nature of the experience. This seems to be another one of those movies and I am here for it. Suspiria is directed by Luca Guadagnino. This is his first movie since Call Me By Your Name which was also a banger.
Boy Erased - November 2nd
Boy Erased is the true story of a homosexual boy who attends a Gay Conversion Therapy at the insistence of his mother and father (a Baptist Pastor). Lucas Hedges is an up and coming actor who has been in several of my favorite movies lately: LadyBird and Mid90s. Pair him with Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe and you get a dynamite cast. Truthfully, this is a heart breaking and compelling story and I am eager to see what this movie has to say about family and belief.
Roma - December 1st
Roma is a year long story of a middle class family living in Mexico City. Hype is driving this movie for me more than anything. I have read nothing but amazing things about the way it is shot and the overall cinematic experience. It is written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón, who made Gravity and Children of Men. It appears to be entirely in black and white, which may be cool, I don’t know. Also, this is Netflix’s major attempt at an Oscar. They have even allowed it to be released in theaters before sending it into everyone’s libraries. It is definitely worth checking out.
